Isopod
Sometimes the smallest forage produces the biggest fish. This Isopod, commonly known as the Sow Bug, faithfully imitates the freshwater crustaceans that trout, panfish, and other species feed on year-round in spring creeks, limestone streams, tailwaters, and stillwaters. With its segmented shellback, curved profile, and wispy legs, it closely resembles the natural scuds and aquatic sowbugs that fish rarely pass up.
The realistic segmented body creates a convincing silhouette, while the soft dubbing beneath the shell breathes with every current, imitating the tiny legs and constant movement of a live isopod. Designed with minimal weight, this fly drifts naturally through the water column, making it ideal for presenting to selective fish feeding on small crustaceans.
Fish it on a long, drag-free drift, beneath an indicator, or as part of a Euro-nymphing setup where trout are keyed in on subtle, natural food sources. When insect hatches are sparse, the Isopod can be one of the most dependable flies in your box.
This particular Isopod is designed after the coloration of the bugs found on the Lackawaxen River all year long.
Tied on a size 14 scud hook.
